The glue that holds The Hunt together is Betty Gilpin’s performance as Crystal. Crystal refuses to fit into either political box. She is entirely pragmatic, focusing strictly on tactical survival rather than ideological debates.
The Hunt arrived in 2020 burdened by political controversy, release delays, and a tidal wave of online outrage from both the left and the right — all before most people had seen a single frame. When it finally hit screens (and quickly VOD), expectations were split: some predicted a mindless “snobs vs. slobs” gore-fest, others a trenchant takedown of modern American tribalism. What we actually got is somewhere in between — an imperfect, often hilarious, and surprisingly smart action-horror hybrid that works best when it stops pretending to be balanced and leans into its chaotic, bloody heart.

The twist? The protagonist, Crystal (a career-defining performance by Betty Gilpin), refuses to play the victim. A veteran of Afghanistan, Crystal is taciturn, resourceful, and utterly unreadable. She doesn’t care about politics; she cares about survival. As the wealthy hunters pat themselves on the back for their wit and moral superiority, Crystal systematically dismantles them, one gruesome death at a time.
The Hunt is directed by Craig Zobel and written by Damon Lindelof ( Lost , The Leftovers ) and Nick Cuse. It was produced by Jason Blum under his highly successful banner, known for creating high-quality genre films with modest budgets. The film was shot in New Orleans from February to April 2019 on an estimated budget of approximately $14 million.
