The concept was born from Fogel's lifelong passions. "As a kid, I always had a love for stop-motion animation," Fogel recalled in an interview with People Magazine . "I was just sort of taken by those Ray Harryhausen films and some of the claymation that you would see on TV at the time". He combined this love with an obsession with pro wrestling and a desire to satirize pop culture icons. The very first match to air was a short on MTV's Cartoon Sushi in 1997, featuring a fight between Marilyn Manson and Charles Manson, which ended with the latter's skeleton being ripped out through his mouth. The series was officially greenlit and premiered on May 14, 1998, running for 75 episodes across four seasons until its initial conclusion in 2002.
