The Ethiopian Bible itself notes that one of the first converts outside of the apostles was the Ethiopian eunuch baptized by Philip in Acts 8:27-39. However, the official establishment came in the 4th century AD when King Ezana of the Aksumite Empire was baptized, making Christianity the state religion of Ethiopia—a full 50 years before the Roman Empire followed suit. As Christianity spread across the Mediterranean in Greek, the Ethiopian church quickly set about translating the scriptures into Ge'ez. Because of this early translation and the relative isolation of the Ethiopian highlands, the Ethiopian Bible preserves a manuscript tradition that is slightly different from the texts that later became standardized in Europe. The church was also a pioneer in print; the first printed edition of the New Testament in the Ge'ez language was produced in 1548 by Ethiopian monks who traveled to Rome. This long, independent history explains why the Ethiopian canon diverges so significantly from the Catholic or Protestant Bibles of the West.
