Making her feature film acting debut, global pop superstar Rihanna played a tough, no-nonsense weapons specialist. Her performance was highly anticipated and added massive pop-culture appeal to the project.

The idea of adapting Battleship into a film was met with immediate skepticism when announced in 2009. Unlike Transformers (sentient robots) or G.I. Joe (action figures with lore), Battleship has no characters, no plot, and no conflict beyond two players saying “B-4” and “You sank my destroyer!”

Battleship remains a standout example of how a simple concept can be scaled into a global epic. Whether it’s the "peg-style" alien projectiles or the sheer thrill of seeing a 70-year-old battleship fire its 16-inch guns, the movie delivers exactly what its title promises.

is a 2012 American military science fiction action film directed by Peter Berg and produced by Universal Pictures. It is loosely based on the classic Milton Bradley guessing game of the same name. The film represents a unique sub-genre of adaptations: translating a board game with no inherent narrative into a big-budget summer blockbuster. Released on May 18, 2012, the film is known for its explosive visual effects, incorporation of real-life military assets, and the breakout acting performance of Rihanna. During the RIMPAC exercise, Alex Hopper’s recklessness leads him to steal eggs from a convenience store to impress a woman (Samantha). As punishment, his brother Stone forces him to mature. But before that arc can finish, an alien force field dome traps three Navy ships (the John Paul Jones , Sampson , and Myoko — representing the global nature of RIMPAC).

The dome collapses. The remaining aliens either die or flee. Alex, now matured, is commended by Admiral Shane. He reconciles with Sam, having finally earned his place as both a leader and a man. The film ends with Alex standing on the deck of the Missouri , saluting the flag as the veterans look on. Unlike Transformers (sentient robots) or G

To lend authenticity to this sci-fi epic, director Peter Berg secured unprecedented support from the U.S. Navy. The production was granted access to active warships, including the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS John Paul Jones , and was allowed to film on the historic USS Missouri , a real-life Iowa-class battleship that is now a museum in Pearl Harbor. Much of the filming took place on location in Hawaii, with the production setting up massive floating sets on barges miles off the coast of Oahu and Maui. This commitment to realism extended to the actors, who underwent real naval training to portray their roles convincingly.
